PGA Championship Navigation Redesign
Before the 2021 tournament I was tasked to redesign the navigation. The navigation not only needed to be transparent, but it also needed to accommodate a global scoreboard at the top.
Overview
The navigation was cluttered with duplicate information. We also had to keep the clock in the navigation. The time and venue information also needed to be shown somewhere on the homepage. Before I started designing, I wanted to make sure the links displayed in the navigation got users where they needed to go and hit all of our business goals.
The first and second options I presented were cleaner with only necessary links to get users where they needed to go. The second option was chosen but didn't look as good as we hoped after implementation. So I went back to the drawing board.
Final Option
For the last option, I moved the date and venue information to the footer. Doing this removed clutter from the navigation. One of the requirements was for the navigation to be transparent. The solution I came up with would only work for pages with a header image.
I needed a solution for pages without header images and a way for the navigation to be readable while the user scroll down the page.
Solution
The solution was to create second navigation. I added a white background and shrunk the logo. The solution works as the main nav for pages without a header image. This secondary navigation will also be used when users scroll down on pages with header images.
